Pet Town, owned by Randy and Deanna Maag, carries dog, cat, fish, reptile, pocket pet, and bird supplies. Originally, the Maags owned a nursery where they then put in a pet department in their garden center to keep business flowing year round. When they sold the nursery, they liked the pet business and decided to keep it. At the time, their 5-year-old daughter picked the name Pet Town. Their success in creating the “go to pet store” in Port Townsend, led them to open a second location in Belfair, WA and a third in Port Orchard, WA. In addition to pet supplies, they offer nail trimming, full service pet grooming, and have added a lifestyle section for pet parents at their Port Townsend location.
Since opening 15 years ago, Randy and Deanna have noticed a significant shift in consumer trends. “People treat their pets much better now than when we first opened, they treat them like their kids”. In addition to being more aware of nutritional needs, the pet parent is now looking for items to pamper their pets. Pet Town has embraced these shifts to offer top food brands, provide fun products and services for the pets, and is tapping into the pet parent’s needs as well.
The Maags first saw Dog is Good at Superzoo in Las Vegas as they were strolling around looking at the many booths. Originally intending to focus only on pet products, they were immediately drawn to the booth, loved the Dog is Good message, and wanted their products. Randy explained that “sometimes you buy things you like and other times you buy things you think your customers will like, and buying becomes easy when you know both you AND your customer will like something. I knew right away we needed to introduce Dog is Good to our stores.” He added, “the shirts themselves and their lines piggyback general feelings about how people feel about their dogs, especially dogvergnugen!” The product lines don’t go stale, are fun, and well received. Their favorite thing about Dog is Good as a company is that even though the company has grown and continues to grow, the Dog is Good crew is very personable and you can always talk to the owners, Jon and Gila.
At Pet Town, Randy and Deanna are very proud of their successes. With bigger stores, they are about to create different sections for the pet products and for the Dog is Good apparel. They have clothing racks and shirts on the walls for everyone to see.
The Maags are very thankful for their amazing employees who make it possible for them to balance work at Pet Town and at their other businesses. At another location of theirs in Port Townsend, a post office sub station, they sell souvenirs, Port Townsend shirts, and all the Dog is Good products, too!
Pet Town is also focused on their local community. For years, they have been active in supporting the Boy and Girl Scouts, the YMCA, local school districts, and sports teams, doing the most they can to give back to the community. They support local business and emphasize keeping it local.
If you have never been to the Northwest, you must go and visit the lovely city of Port Townsend and make Pet Town a must stop destination! We commend Pet Town on their many successes and wish them continued success!
