National Mutt Day is recognized both July 31st and December 2nd. These days are for pet owners and potential adopters to recognize the importance of saving and celebrating mixed breeds. Because 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds, these two days will highlight the amazing characteristics of being “owned” by a mixed breed dog.
What’s A Mutt?
Simply speaking, a mutt is a combination of two or more dog breeds. Sometimes the lineage of a mutt is hard to distinguish. When you are adopting a mutt (hopefully on National Mutt Day), the rescue/shelter does do good “guesswork.” However you can try a dog DNA test to determine your dog’s genetic history.
Live Long & Prosper
Did you know that mixed breeds tend to be healthier and live longer than purebred dogs? Yes, it’s true! Mixed breed dogs tend to live longer due to their genetic diversity. So on July 31st, National Mutt Day, get out to your local shelter and get a new mixed breed best friend.
