More divorces take place in the month of January than any other month. I suppose it is because people do not want to break up the family during the holidays. But for dog lovers, it brought to mind the question, “If custody battles over children is so common, what happens to the dog(s)?”. Since dogs are deemed “property” by law, they do not share the same rights as children when it comes to custody battles. I was surprised to learn that some couples have even come up with premarital agreements as to what would happen in the event of a break up. This may seem ludicrous to non-pet lovers but with divorce rates on the rise, it is something that probably should be considered.
