History Lesson

Chocolate’s 4,000-year history began in ancient Mesoamerica, present day Mexico. It’s here that the first cacao plants were found. The Olmec, one of the earliest civilizations in Latin America, were the first to turn the cacao plant into chocolate. They drank their chocolate during rituals and used it as medicine. In the 15th century, the Aztecs even used cocoa beans as currency.

Chocolate Is Good For You

You dream about it.  Crave it.  Need it.  You love chocolate.  Here’s the good news…chocolate is good for you! Dark chocolate contains powerful antioxidants and increases heart health, which is especially important for dog moms and dog dads. The antioxidants in dark chocolate have been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of clotting and increase blood circulation to the heart, thus lowering the risks of stroke, coronary heart disease and death from heart disease.

Death By Chocolate

While you may be receiving health benefits from eating chocolate, you dog will not. Chocolate is toxic to dogs mostly because of its theobromine content, which dogs are unable to metabolize effectively.  In addition, chocolate also contains caffeine which is not healthy for canines. Dogs process theobromine and caffeine slowly, which allows these toxic compounds to build up in their systems and cause clinical signs associated with chocolate toxicity.

But when it comes to toxicity, not all chocolate is created equal If a dog eats chocolate, it is different based on the type of chocolate they consumed. Baker’s chocolate and cocoa, for example, are considered to be the most toxic, then dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate.
