For the month of August we had the privilege of working with Trupanion Pet Insurance for our Daily Dogvergnügen monthly contest. Located in Seattle, WA, Trupanion Pet Insurance is one of the leading pet insurance companies out there. They pride themselves with providing the best coverage you can get for your furry friends.
Trupanion is my chosen pet insurance company for my Chihuahua, Oliver. I used to work for the company before I moved from Seattle, WA to beautiful sunny Orange County. Working in the call center was a great way for me to connect with the pet community and get to know fellow dog lovers over the phone and help them choose the best plan.
Trupanion is an accident and illness pet coverage plan. If anything were to unexpectedly happen to Oliver, he would be covered based off 90% of his vet bill. For me it’s a simple monthly payment for peace of mind. I couldn’t imagine anything happening to Oliver.
Let me tell you a story. As a pet photographer, I meet a lot of people with their pets. In college I had a friend come in with her sweet pitbull (that lived with a Chihuahua) for a photo-shoot. Her dog had on a studded dog collar; you know the ones with the Star studs? Well, I had my dog Oliver at the studio already… I was holding him when I went to let my friend into the studio with her dog. Her dog wanted to sniff at Oliver. When the pitbull jumped up to sniff Oliver, Oliver’s tail fur got caught in the stud of the dogs collar. You know that special little hair that is just off the tip of a shorthaired Chihuahua’s tail? Yeah. It got caught. When my friend pulled her dog back, and I went to put Oliver down… The tip of Oliver’s tail ripped off. Oliver yelped, we didn’t know what happened, he was bleeding, my friend’s dog was super calm and didn’t understand what was going on. I went to clean up and found Oliver’s fur/tip of his tail on the floor. Proceed to freak out mode.
After rushing Oliver to the ER, the vet on staff told me that I would have to amputate Oliver’s tail 2/3 of the way off because bone was exposed.
I went to another vet for a 2nd opinion and we decided we would try to see if the skin would grow over the bone. And it did. Oliver still has his tail and is doing great.
At the time I didn’t work for Trupanion, and didn’t really consider pet insurance for my fur child. It wasn’t until I started working for Trupanion that I saw the importance of having pet insurance in cases where unexpected events, like that one that happened to me, could result in significant financial setback. If I had the money and opted to amputate Oliver’s tail, Trupanion would’ve reimbursed me 90% of my vet bill.
It’s so important for us as dog parents to think about the unexpected. So many times accidents happen or illness creeps up on us when we aren’t ready. That’s when Trupanion is there for you.
I am thankful for a company like Trupanion. Working for them was so much fun. Everyone there cares about the health and well-being of your dog, and you can tell by the way they talk to customers on the phone. They understand because they have dogs themselves, sitting at the foot of their chair. Everyday you’re allowed to bring your dog to work and that makes going to work so much better.
Few things to remember when considering Pet Insurance:
*All Pet Insurance works on a reimbursement basis
*Trupanion only covers accidents or illness (wellness/dental cleaning/exam fees are up to you to pay) Examples: Broken leg, Cancer, allergies, hot spots, vomiting, etc.
*Trupanion covers up to 90% of eligible items on your ACTUAL vet bill(most other companies base your vet bill off of what they think you should have paid for the standard of vet care in your area)
*With Trupanion you can change your deductible at any time, multiple times. You’re never lumped into one deductible
*Trupanion has no annual, lifetime, or per-incident limits on their coverage. If your dog were to get sick and need lots of treatment, they would reimburse you for the length of that eligible illness with no limits.
*Pet Insurance will not cover pre-existing conditions. If your dog is already experiencing issues, pet insurance won’t be able to cover those issues if you sign up.
*With Trupanion you can cancel at any time if you no longer want the insurance.
Working with Trupanion was a great experience for me and I will always speak highly about this company. I know first-hand how much they care and want to help pet owners make the best decisions for their pet.
