Here are some staggering facts about literacy in America:
- One out of four children in America grow up without learning how to read.
- Students who don’t read proficiently by the 3rd grade are 4 times likelier to drop out of school.
- Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare.
- 53% of 4th graders admitted to reading recreationally “almost every day,” while only 20% of 8th graders could say the same.
- About 80% of children living in economically disadvantaged communities will lose reading skills over summer breaks due to a lack of access to books and other resources.
- For families living in poverty, books are a luxury purchase outweighed by basic living expenses. More than half of families living in poverty don’t have children’s books in their homes.
Never Read Alone
A dog can change the way you read. Throughout the month of March, we are celebrating the magic of dogs to benefit dog inspired reading programs and advance children’s literacy. The Dog is Good for Good Organization has created a fundraiser to help kids and dogs!
Open A Book
Reading dogs have a very important mission. Many studies have shown that reading to dogs is also a great way to improve self confidence in children. This is because it provides an opportunity to speak out loud, but without the judgement of human company. We invite you to help them empower children through reading. Your generous support impacts the dog(s) and hundreds of children participating in their organization’s literacy program.
